The lead officer was an SFPD official who arrived at Alcatraz with a young Emerson Hauser on 20 March 1963 for a prisoner transfer, aboard the Warden Kelvin. After seeing a deserted van and no guards in sight, he and Hauser explored the prison, only to find it completely deserted. He asked Hauser to radio the station and to "send everyone."
